Missouri is known as the “Gateway to the West” because it was one of the main stops on the way to California. Missouri land was inexpensive and the cattle had ample grazing lands. Because of this fact, the pioneers moved here in droves. Population exploded and the riverboats transported supplies all up and down the Mississippi River. The railroad was being built from the east to the west. With the massive growth, the pioneers forced the natives to move further west. Those who stayed in here, settled near the Mississippi River. A melting pot of people moved in from the north and the south, so Missouri became a split state during war. Slavery was not a major industry in Missouri partly because they were costly and many of the Missourians were from the north. During the Civil War, when the call for soldiers came, Missouri divided its armies of soldiers. The Union Army received 110,000 soldiers and the Confederate Army 40,000. With the state being split, this divided cities and towns, neighbors and families, fathers and sons, and even brothers. Missouri saw as many as 1200 individual battles on their own land. The stench of death hung in the air as thousands of lives were lost fighting or starvation because you had to leave your home moving deeper west into the more remote areas. Many soldiers died in battle, of bloody dismemberment, infection, starvation, dysentery and brutal accidents. These violent battles of the war were over the brutality of slavery and had grown to epic proportion. The Civil War was brutal and most times fatal. From the inner turmoil to the numerous violent battles, the souls left behind to complete missions, lost between life and death now roams Missouri.
