Virginia, is one of the 13 original colonies to become a state, is a state full of the bloody and gory history of war and slavery. Virginia was named for the “Virgin Queen” Elizabeth 1. Jamestown was settled by the English colonists and the farming of silk was the first export. However, blight killed off the food for the silkworm and tobacco rose to be the major export. As the tobacco industry grew so did the population of English and their slaves. Evolution of our country and the change from the most restrictive government and taxes to a new and freer society was occurring. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and soon thereafter the Revolutionary War broke out. Virginia was central. The bloody battles ensued, the experience brutal. When General George Washington captured the British at Yorktown in 1781, the Revolutionary War ended. Many were left injured, dismembered, infected, or dead. This had a devastating economic impact on the tobacco farming. With tobacco farming on the decline and the invention of the cotton gin in the south, many of the slave owners began selling off their slaves to the southern plantation owners. This separated families and divided the communities. Those who could would try to escape by way of the Underground Railroad. If caught, many times death was torture. When Abraham Lincoln called for Union troops to abolish the practice of slavery, Virginia a slave state, joined the Confederacy. The western section of Virginia split off and joined the Union, formed their own new government and became a new state of West Virginia. Virginia became a major theater of the Civil War. Defending Richmond was their ultimate goal. The Union knew they needed to take Richmond and all the skirmishes and battles along the way became blood baths. With was came the prisons. Old tobacco factories were turned into prisons. Stripped of any furnishings, the prisons were dirty, full of vermin, crowded, and they lacked proper ventilation. The summer heat stifling, the winters lacked sufficient heating. The prisoners had little to no supplies of food, clothing, or clean water. Death was at an all-time high. Whether you were fighting in battle or sitting in a prison, the experience was a hell on earth. This left the souls of the dead angry and resentful. The War continued and the death toll repulsive: The Seven Day battle 36,000 dead, Battle of Spotsylvania Court House 31,000, Battle of Chancellorsville 30,000, Battle of Wilderness 28,000, and the list goes on and on. Death hung in the air, the stench repugnant, so many left dead, the numbers were devastating. In the end, the Confederacy lost Richmond. General Lee surrendered in Appomattox. The death totals the highest of any war in history; Virginia holds this bloody gruesome history. Souls, many stuck between life and death, not knowing how to cross over. These souls were very angry and seeking revenge. Virginia was devastated by the Civil War. The state had to grow from the ground up. Again, through years of growth, the wealthy white businessmen took a one party democratic rule for the next 80 years. Virginia was a state that began regrowth with educating the children. Education was a key in the reconstruction of the state; however, segregation was a continued issue. Virginia fought the federal law to end segregation. Prince Edward County even closed the schools to stop the integration. This battle created more tension throughout the state. Eventually, Virginia had to succumb to the pressure and integrate the schools. All this negativity, anger, separation of the classes and races, has taken its toll on the souls who have been stuck in purgatory and serve the under-lord below. Tortured through war, prisons, separation by race and wealth has enslaved the souls to the most evil, sick, revengeful, and cruel followers of the under-lord below. Darkwood Manor has been the center of supernatural occurrences, ghostly sightings, and murder for over a century. Built by the infamous Leroy Darkwood and his wife Raven Darkwood in 1880, the house is now owned by Miskatonic University. The house was given to the university by the Darkwood's only child, Abigail Darkwood after her death in 1940. The university left the home sealed after the mysterious death of a professor, Dr. Simon Ghoulsby.
