Iowa, the “Hawkeye State”, nicknamed as a tribute to Chief Black Hawk. Many pioneers who settled in Iowa were families. Iowa was different than the other eastern states. This was their first experience with prairie lands. The extreme north section of the state of Iowa had trees for building a home, the southern section of the state did not. This led many to settle closer up north. The ones who went south had to come up with materials to build their houses. This led to sod houses or “soddies” on the prairie; inexpensive, cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. Fuel became the dried corn husks, prairie hay, and dried animal droppings. The times were most difficult, but the land was inexpensive. With growth, the railroads across Iowa were constructed. This opened up new commerce through Iowa. Iowa became a major exporter of food and supplies. This led Iowa to supplying the Civil War troops with a food. Iowa also sent more than 75,000 men into the Civil War. They did not even need to impose a draft for more men signed up to be a part of Union Army than were requested. Although the Civil War did not find battles in the state of Iowa, many of the men who left never returned. If they did come back they were never the same. The Civil War was bloody and gruesome. The men went into battle with the drive to win, they returned with the vision that you cannot un-see. The stench of death in the air burned into their psyche for all eternity. Those who returned came back; injured, maimed, dismembered, infected, starving, and cold. The souls of those who seen an untimely death, not aware of how to pass are now stuck between life and death, in purgatory forever to do the bidding of the under-lord below.
